CANP Failure????

Hey guys.
I have just received Diagnostic code '85' from my EA(6 cyl, MPI, Manual).

Code 85 - Canister output circuit check fail.
Cause of concern:
- Faulty solenoid
-Wiring harness
-ECU

I'm a little confused as to what exactly the 'Canister' is.
Are they referring to the Fuel pressure reg, or the ISC???

The problem I am experiencing with the car is a major power loss. It feels like low fuel pressure. At low revs, it’s ok (Under 2000rpm) but as soon as the revs go up, the engines pull stops, and the more throttle given, the more the engine dies out.

I have tested the pump, lines and filter and I'm getting good pressure to the injector rail.

I ran the car without the vacc hose connected to the Fuel pressure regulator and I notice no difference.. still poor power, no better, no worse.
With no vacc connected, will the fuel pressure be set at Maximum or Minimum?

I’ll give a different ECU a go, but I doubt it will help.

Any help appreciated.

hey

i have little to no idea on this, but ill throw in my 2c worth anyway. as far as i know the canister is the fuel vapour canister, the black box filled with charcoal under the bumper. it has something to do with emissions control and fuel vapours or something. anyway, you have a solenoid under your mpefi air box that is supposed to open and close at the ECU's command to release the vapours. theres hoses to and from it connected to the fuel system.

thats about all i know about it! in my gregories manual theres some basic tests you can do on it - check if the solenoid is functioning, the pressure it holds at, etc.

good luck mate, and id be interested to know how you go with this one :)

re

Yer I ended up figuring out what the solenoid was from. Your right J, its the carbon canister solenoid. For some reason the solenoid shit it's self. Anyhow, I replaced the thing and the error code has gone now.

However, I still have a power loss. The new solenoid helped a little, but the car still isn't right. I've tried 2 ECU's, and a shit load of other things.
I'll change the O2 sensor next. After that, I'll give the MAP sensor a go, and if it's still not
back to how it was last Friday night after all this, i'm gonna scream.

Cheers

Re: re

Bass, anything too do with the emissions control should not have any noticable impact on performance... How is the motor responding?? where is the power loss, low, mid or high rpm?

re

howdie Brent,

The reason I was so confused with the code 85 was because of the exact reason that the pollution gear could not have that much of an impact, so i thought they were referring to the fuel pressure reg.

Once I fixed the problem, it seemed to gain a little more torque, and rev better to the 3000rpm mark, once again, strange.

At the moment, it has probably got about 70% pull to about 2600rpm, and after that it dies in the butt. It feels like there is not enough air or fuel. The air path is fine, so i'm guessing its the fuel.

After the 3000rpm mark, the more throttle I give it, the more it seems to choke.

Can anyone tell me what the default setting for the fuel pressure reg is. Maximum pressure or minimum?

I'll give the O2 sensor a go tomorrow, and then if that don't work, I'll change the map, as well as anything else I can find.

What I find strange is that the car has a perfect idle, which is why I have dismissed any vacuum leaks.

Oh well, just have to keep my thining cap on.

Cheers.

Re: re

Hmmm... From what u have said, id be almost certain it was the MAP sensor... If it were a fuel problem, wouldnt it choke at full throttle starts? Strange its not showing up an error tho.. and i hope yer cat aint blocked like mine was

Re: re

as far as i know, the o2 sensor wouldnt be used when the engine was cold... so does it do the same things from a cold start?

if it does, you could look at MAP and TPS...

re.

Yo, I just changed the O2 sensor and there was no difference.
It's the same at any temp.

The TPS is only two weeks old, and I've had TPS problems before and this does not feel like it.
Just to make sure, I'll change the TPS when I do the MAP.

Hey Bass how are you??With regards to your fuel test have you actually checked litres per min??Which is 240cc in 10 secs.Normal pressure at idle is around 200 kpa at idle and 250 kpa when the vaccum hose is disconnected. It is strange that you did not notice any difference in idle or running rough when the vaccum line is disconnected from your fuel pressure reg.Does this happen only on petrol??Could be possible that your ignition timing is out.If its only on petrol well let me think about it for a bit.
