car stalls everytime i go thtrough a puddle - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

hi guys.

I got an EL fairmont, and every time i go through a decent sized puddle, the next time i increase throttle the car stalls....if i manage after many messy times to get it started again, it will idle beautifully and then as soon as i go to increase throttle, (or drive off, or increase speed if i manage to be driving) it just shakes a bit, and stalls, every time, and only if i have just recently gone through a big puddle.

I dont know what to check. Any ideas would be great

well obviously something is getting wet, good chance it is your coil or high tension leads. check to make sure that the rubber ends on the coil lead is sealing properly.

i cant think of anything else at the moment

well yeah something is wet but i dont know what is under the car that could get wet or have this reaction ?, i dont have a manual or chassis stands.

Its obviously not the coil though as its not wet, and if it wasnt working, the car wouldnt idle and rev perfectly smooth like it is doing.....problem is i cant apply throttle or it stalls, if i apply it gently, it almost stalls but picks up and goes fine.

my car some times does that, i have always thought it had something to do with the plugs on the gearbox....thats what feels like it is shaking. i could be wrong. my advice is dont drive throught water.

i had that problem everytime i washed under my bonnet, the rotor cap was cracked and water was getting into the dizzy causing misfire/stalling when the throttle was opened, and it shook at idle untill it was able to dry out.

I would say dizzy, on a sunny day open your bonnet and pour water on different parts and see what happens :)

My dads range rover did that a few times while we were out hitting a few too many puddles while off-road, got some spray stuff for the dizzy and it sealed it up, continued to drive through puddles all afternoon with no problems.

I'd suggest dizzy, or maybe the TPS although I think it might be a bit high on the motor for that...
