Internals collapsing is what usually happens, check it like you check any other muffler on your car, give it a bit of a hit with ya hand when its cool and if it rattles it is definitley stuffed. Also if the car feels unusually sluggish but the car is still running smooth and no ignition/fuel parts seem to be worn safe bet your cat is gone
