hi has anyone changed there spark leads and dizzy cap on a el xr6 if so how did u do it i havent tried it yet but looks like there is no room to do anything there do u need to take off anything?? thanks
What dizzy cap??? I just had a look at my
EF11 6cyl there is a coil pack, not a dizzy or cap to be seen anyware. So why would a later model EL XR6 like vthai99's have a dizzy.Anbody know why?I'm a bit curious now.
you will find the el ran dizzies, mine does anyway and its May 98 build. You are right in saying an ef series 1 and 2 ran coil packs and then ford wanting to save money went back to a dizzy on the el's for at least the gli, futura, and fairmont. I am not completly sure for fairmont ghia or xr6 but I would assume it would be the same.
I can't offer any advice on how to change leads as I haven't done it yet. Nor I am looking forward to it due to the tight space and the leads have to run the full length of the engine before they come over to the plug side.
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the leads so they come over the rocker cover midway like on the au engines.
A set of plugs and leads should be able to be done (on any model EA to AU) in around 30 to 40mins,coil pack or not.
To fit leads to the models with coil packs, remove the air box and induction tubes altogether in 1 piece. It should give you plenty room to put your hand underneith the manifold to place the leads on.
I think the easiest way would be from underneath - the service bays I've seen at my local Ford dealer are on two levels the car is driven into the bay and the mechanic walks underneath.
the ford dealership i worked at only had hoists, and thus did it from the top. changing leads shouldnt be too hard. from memory the dizzy caps rear clip was the bugger!
Its possible to do, but you will scrape skin off yourr knuckles. Firstly the Intake Manifold needs to be removed. (Only the plastic, not the Throttle body or anything). Next remove only 1 plug at time, starting from the front of the engine. Note: there is no way to see what plug you are pulling, so try and run the Leads to approximately where the dizzy/coil pack is. Finally the Spark plug plastic covers are slit, so as you dont need to run the leads through them, but rather open them up and place the leads in.
I would suggest getting very good leads, (EG, magnacore's or equivalent), especially if you have an EF. I was fouling plugs up every 5000 kays, but now with the magnacores, Im getting up 10,000, and the plugs are still usable.
Sorry, meant all that plastic tube crap. Had a mental block, and didnt know what to call the STUFF. So change the word MANIFOLD, for the word BLACK TUBING CRAP.
