I have an EL Fairmont Ghia, and was wondering if there would be any hassles running cold air pipe from the cornering lamp hole, bhind the inner guard and into the bottom of the airbox? I am told the abs sensor is there. any info?
Apparently on the EL, the ABS sensor has been moved a little bit, so it is easier to do this mod, than on the EF (Lucky buggers!).
I got 3.5inch Aluminium Flexi tube (1 metre length) for about $30 from a Plumbing wholesaler, but unfortunately I am running in to more difficulties than solutions.
EG, If I bend the flexi pipe to go around the ABS module, the Diametre will be reduce to about 1.5inches (No real big deal),
But then I have Fairlane Cornering lamps, and dont really wanna get rid of them, so I either have to duct straight down (no Ram effect, like on the motorbikes), or try and duct it to the front air intake for the Radiator (Impossible, cuz of the Aircon Cylinder is in the bloooooooody way !).
Aaaaaargh !
Obviously though, If U dont have the Fairlane lamps, then things become very easy !
if only i had a digi camera, would make like so much easier for everyone who owned an EF. i spent about a week trying to figure it out, and about 2 days fitting it, and she's blardy perfect!
no need to drill hole in airbox, can use hole already in. need 3" heat insulated brake pipe (flexi) 1x 3" drillsaw, time n patience.
drille a infront of the airbox, between airbox and headlight (need the power block to be unscrewed and moved to a different spot (ie 1" higher than is now, mine floats around, didnt secure it..) cut the power block mount closest to fender, and drill 3" hole thru that area.
this will miss the ABS unit, and allow you to run the 3" pipe thru.
stick pipe into front grille holes, route pipe thru drilled hole, bend it to the right (looking front on to the car) and then bend it 180 degrees around and into the factory hole.
bobs ya uncle, pipe does touch radiator, but being heat insulated, doesnt affect it much, cold air works perfectly, very good sucking pressure, and ram air affect.
A question that always stops me from doing this mod is :
Does cutting a 3" hole in the sheet metal of the car void your insurance policy ? I am under the impression that cutting holes in the rear shelf to fit speakers does in fact void your insurance. I know that the rear shelf provides some structural integrity to the car, and the wheel arch in the front does not, but regardless what would an insurance company say if something happened and they found a big hole for the cold air in the front. It would be easy for them to reject a claim due to non standard modifications to the car.
as for insurance, tell em you bought it like that, and didnt know what it was used for, play dumb, and they should approve the claim. Otherwise if your unsure, or dont want to risk it, dont modify your car in regards to cold air induction.
Thats a fairly large pipe there Mr Sparkle - What's the diameter? The pickup in the front bumper looks a lot larger too - how does it look from the front??
Was there any clearance probs??
Sorry for all the questions but it is a very nice setup and it is similar to what i want to do.
