Hello everybody I would like to no the weights of the Mark 3,4,5 cortina and Mark 1,2,3 capri if anyone can help, as i wish to use ethier one as a project with 4lt in it or a V8 any help would be great thanks
Son has one T.C XLE 250 2v 5 speed steel case, electronic dist ex XE & 350 Holley soon to be replaced with Weber from X.E..Saab 15" wheels.Needs decent brakes..!!Most his young peers don't even know what the hell it is.Most the time they see it from behind.. Haha...
The Capri won't fit a straight 6 falcon motor but did come with a 3.5 v6 in the hey days.
V8's will fit in to the capri (my cousin has a 9sec Capri with a 351)
The cortina is by far the best option though buddy.
Capri parts and panels are near impossible to come by and very expensive you will find your self ordering parts from UK alot and that ain't cheap.
I'm not a big fan of the TD cortina (mark III) but I love the mark IV or TE They look tuff!!! The mark I and mark II cortina are great as well but hard to get parts for. My advise would be to get a TE cortina for about $2000 (that would get a fully optioned Ghia in good condition) make sure it's already a 6 though. Then fit an EL motor and t5 to it. You may have to modify the selector linkage as the trans lenght isn't the same. You'll also need customer engine mounts and gearbox mounts. the tail shaft may need some ajustment. The stock 6cyl diff is pretty good so leave it.
Just imagine a 157kw Cortina for about $6000! That would rock.
Hang on don't do that it's what I want to do once I've got my own work shed
Thanks for the help, theres one more question i need to ask as 6s are abit hard to find in NZ (i think havent had a good look yet) is what would i need to do to put a 6 in a 4cyl cortina??
You'll need a new crossmember and engine mounts the brakes are bigger and the shockers and springs are stronger on the front as well.
the gear box and diff are differant as well and the only way to fit the falcon gearbox is to get the 6cyl cortina rear gearbox cover and crossmember. Also the diff.
You're far better off waiting to find a 6cy version. But none of those things are hard to change.
Just remeber the 77 6cyl version used the xd motors and the parts are designed for these. if you try to put in an xf motor the fuel pump won't fit in to the engine mount. If your fitting an ea or younger motor you'll need customer mounts and maybe a differant sump.
yep, what carazy said is pretty well spot on. There is allot of steering and suspension components that are different. However, if you are doing a complete rebuild on the car you would probably replace almost all of them anyway, so dropping a 6 into a 4 cyl corty wont be any big deal really.
I don't know how common cortinas are in the land where men are men and sheep are scared, but in Oz the wreckers are full of cortinas.
a guy at work has a 1980 or so cortina with a modded 4.1, nothing really special done to the engine, 3.23 open diff, 4 speed, and XA (?) bonnet vents, i raced him and he absolutely destroyed me...less weight = fast car!!!
i would go the cortina, you just gotta make sure its low so it looks decent though!
The auto Cortina had a bigger tunnel so more room for bigger g/box. The diffs from 4 to six are bassicaly the same only the ratios are different. From tc to latter models the shock mounts are different but can easily be made to fit..
It's not that the tunnels to small for the falcon box it's just that the part were the selector mounts on the rear casing is set further back on the falcons this means that a falcon box would have the shifter pokeing through the metal about 4 inches to far back. the actual box is exactly the same. Keep in mind when installing the motor to put the box and motor in as one unit because the falcon 6 only just fits in the bay and leave F%^k all space to tighten the bellhousing bolts. I had to use the swear word to show how much it sucks to do.'
It's exactly what I want to do when I have my own house and shead. I love the toughness of those TE cortina's.
Oh and for god sake replace the engine mounts if you change the motor over I went from and xd to an efi worked XF motor in my old corty and the torque of the monster ripped the metal of the old engine mounts like paper and threw the motor in to the radiator (still drove it home though just pulled out the radiator) -God I loved that car!
same thing happened to me with my TD corty, had a 250 log motor(worked), ripped the metal of the engine mounts and threw the enging sideways (didnt hit the radiator though, I had to drive home with only 1st and 2nd gear!
The 6cylinder cortina has an extra brace that bolts to the chassis rails just below the bellhousing. The early TC at least, maybe the euro cars, don't have the recessed firewall that allows the six to fit, make sure whatever body you get has this; if its a 4 the recess allows you to see the top of the gearbox from the engine bay. The front suspension crossmember should be identical. I have a few of the 6cyl single-rails, but if you can't find one in NZ a celica box might do the job. I've fitted an alloy head six the only hassle was the extractors, since due to the chassis brace a normal falcon set of extractors will not fit.
