the corty wont start (tf 4cyl auto)

weve tried the coil, the plugs and points, a carby kit, the battery.

dad did the timing yesterday (sat) and it was running beautifully then dad put the timeing belt guard back on and now it wont start. and we dont have a clue whats wrong

just wondering if anybody can help.

is it getting spark? Is it even cranking over?
If it's no spark it could even be the ignition barrel like my car was.

it is getting spark, and it's cranking over. were baffled dad rang one of his workmates who has been a mechanic for over 20 years and he can figure out whats wrong either.

EDIT: weve now got the car running (dad redid the timeing) and we took it for a drive but now it's blowing heaps and heaps of oil smoke. and running pretty rough. still dont know what could be causeing the smoke (which is why dad checked the engine in the first place) it was blowing a little bit of smoke over the last week and it had an oil leak which dad fixed.

sounds like something internal is broken on the motor dude. Doesn't sount doo.
If it dies go get a 6 from the wreakers.

we put a new fuel filter on it and now it goes like a shower of S#*t but is still blowing heaps of smoke. dad is going to do the inlet valves (becuase he didnt do all of the valves last time) and put on a new head gasket and a new tappet gasket on which he's been told "should work" fingers crossed.

Check the valve stem seals since those 2 litres get a lot of oil to the top..

weve done everything we can do for the valve's and weve done all the seals etc. and weve re done the timing and changed the oil but it still smokes a little,
but now were haveing troubles with the alternator weve tried three different alternators from the wreckers and it will start and go for a while but when it gets turned off it doesnt turn on again and the alternator light is always on. weve checked the wires etc and they all work fine. dads just got it going now (jump start) but it's like the battry doesnt keep charge (it's a new battry) or the alternator isnt charging while it's running. dad's running it so he can see if the alternator is charging.

edit: we changed the oil because dad found out we were using the wrong oil. thats the smoke problem fixed, the timing is still out though. havent checked the alternator yet but it has started a few times since we jump started it earlier.
