Hello forum. I have a question about the cruise control on a 2000 Ford Taurus station wagon (American, automatic transmission, adjustable pedals). When I try to engage the cruise control (by pressing SET), the dashboard CRUISE light flashes on then immediately off, and it doesn't engage.

I recently had a problem with the brake lights staying on, so I replaced the brake light on/off (BOO) switch (on top of the pedal), and that took care of the brake light problem, but it didn't fix the cruise control. I thought it would fix it, so it must be something else that's wrong.

Does anyone have any ideas where to look? I checked the cables at the throttle and they're both on tight. One of the throttle cables runs back to a unit mounted near the firewall on the driver's side, which I guess is the cruise control actuator, but I'm not sure.

The problem seems to be electronic -- something is causing the cruise control to cut out immediately after setting, and it's not the brake, so what is it?

I live in New York City and almost never use the cruise control, so it isn't a big deal, but if I can fix it easily, I will.

I would guess that one of the sensors that turns the Cruise off.. is stuck on. It could be one of a million things. I would guess that approaching a dealer woudl be a good idea as it may be a common thing on those model Taurus'

I had a similar problem with the EF. The brake switch on the pedal would be my first port-of-call, but if that fails, try the brake sensor thing on the brake master cylinder. If that is slightly stuck on that could be your problem.
Usually happens if you have crap, or have filled the brake system with power steering fluid. It swells the rubbers on the inside, therefor not releasing fully. My guess is that's what it'll be.

Have you filled or checked the Master cylinder lately?

you have had the experience of filling your brake booster with power steer fluid? yea Gods...

your brake switch might not be adjusted correctly - how many wires go to it? how far do you have to push the pedal before the lights come on? set it up so you have to have the pedal in far enough to actually start retarding the foreward motion of the car before they come on.

Yeh, yeh. Honest mistake. Anyone could have done it. Same looking bottles. Anyway needed a new brake system.

But yeh the brake/pressure on the end of the cylinder was the problem for me. Maybe not for you, but for me.
