drive by wire what the hell is it

all i wanna know is what the hell drive by wire is from what i understand there is no accelerator cable but how does it work.

Correct, no accelerator cable.

Sensor (potentiometer?) at the accel pedal feeds input to the ECU which does it's usual thing and also operates an electronically controlled throttle body. It's no longer a direct relationship between what your right foot does and how far the throttle opens up - the ECU is programmed to interpret your pedal input then open the throttle the optimum amount for what it predicts you want to happen.
