Sensor (potentiometer?) at the accel pedal feeds input to the ECU which does it's usual thing and also operates an electronically controlled throttle body. It's no longer a direct relationship between what your right foot does and how far the throttle opens up - the ECU is programmed to interpret your pedal input then open the throttle the optimum amount for what it predicts you want to happen.
