EA coughing

My parents EA started to cough and surge just when you start to accelerate, and between gear changes, when the revs drop. They put it into ultratune who tested a lot of things on it, and came to the conclusion that it was a faulty ECU costing $350. They didn't bother doing it straight away, but it is getting much worse. Now, last night I filled up the petrol tank (we normally only fill it to 1/2 way), and the surging stopped. Tonight it is back down to around 1/2 and it is beginning to surge again. The fuel pressure and filter was checked and found to be fine, so I am thinking the fuel pump is picking up air. Anyone know if this is common, and where the air might be getting in.

Thanks in Advance.

Hmmm sounds like a check of the intank filter/& pump is advisable. Remove cover through boot..May be water in there too, restrcting tank filter.. imo...
