Hey guys i was wondering if ya could help me out here.
I'm seriously thinking about buying an EBII GLi 4.0 Litre, and I need to know what to look out for when checking the car over.
I'll be having my dads mate (who is a mechanic) check it over, but was hoping just to be safe that you dudes could give me some hints into not buying a lemon.

Check the obvious like a/c, heater, all window winders...

And definately get a pressure test done on the cooling system.

When you take it for a spin, get up to about 50kmh, then floor it. When you reach about 80-90kmh(or when the tach is about 4000+rpm) and then back off. Note if there are any unsual clunks etc....

Also, when driving, see if theres any flaring in the gearbox. It seems to be quite a common prob.

Want to tell us how many k's and how much $$$$ ??

Known problems: Auto tranny, head gasket, diff noise (c/w & pinion?), radiator tanks split, power window motors can be affected by rain/washing car as can central locking, tappet gasket gasket can go hard and leak oil everywhere.

Water pumps are a known issue as the car will only severely overheat on the highway at higher speeds. Cost me a good engine just recently. If the engine leaks oil be prepared to spend a lot of time or money. Steering racks clunking means new rack required.

having said that, and excepting the fact I'm up for big $$$$ for a new engine the car itself was good value for the money. Fairmont Ghia wagon LSD 4.0 auto for $5k 182000km. Good car for that!
