Pete,
Abit of info on ED's from what i know, Diff ratio would be 3.23:1 being a wagon and power from the 6's is 148kw and 348Nm.
Benefits of an ED over EBII include more sound deadening material around the dash and doors, thicker glass and the introduction of the R134a refrigerant in the aircon.
As with any Inline 6, look at the engine particularly around the cylinder no 6 area. If the car has a blown gasket this would be the first place fluid will be leaking from and runs down the flywheel housing.
A clattery engine can be one of two things, either lifters or timing chain/guide.
Are you getting a manual? IF you are pay attention to the pedal box and firwall where the cable goes through (quick squize with the torch under the steering column should reveal if the pedal box is ok or about to fall apart. Usually though if a sports clutch hasn't been fitted pedal box assy and firewall should be fine.
My EF has done 222k and no dramas with firewall or pedal box.
