Re: ef towing

try changing the position of the xd on the trailer, either move the xd forward or back a bit

Re: ef towing

ive nearly lost it a few times when going about 100 , i just go slower now but it makes a long trip
i usually put it as far forward as possible ( with xd facing forward also)- thats about the only place it can go
i towed a xf yesty with it facing back - never again , the ef didnt like corners much

Re: ef towing

I had my XD on a service station trailer backwards and could not go over 60km/h without getting the sways.

Then I had my XD towing with a hire place trailer and a XE falcon. The car was loaded on backwards (worse case scenario) from Melbourne to Shepparton and I was sitting on 110km/h whenever the speed limit let me. We then offloaded the vehicle, lifted motor out and loaded it again nose forward. I had absolutely no problems towing it to Deniliquin; the roads are not very good and have multiple bends. I was still sitting on 100km/h.

It was illegal; but I realised the main factor is the trailer itself.

Re: ef towing

I assume you have a decent towing setup with stabiliser arms?

Weight is surposed to go forward of the center axle too, you want to place weight down on the car slightly, you dont want the weight off the towball. I would reccomend you fit some stiffer suspension, both springs and shocks to the rear to handle the added weight.

If you do things half arsed you are going to cause damage to your car, your trailer and possibly someone else on the road. At the very least you should have the towing pack fitted, stabiliser arms and probably a brake controller fitted.

Re: ef towing

I used to tow 400km each month to the drags with around 2400kg all up behind an EL XR8. Things to try...
1. Tyre pressures above 40psi (trailer 45, rear car 43, front car 40)
2. King heavy duty springs, standard height, and Koni shocks.
3. All bushes 100%, especially rear watts link. Also check front inner lower control arm bushes - this upset my towing when worn.
4. Have the car on the trailer so that there is about 150 kg down force on the tow ball. Too far foward and the tow car front wheels lift - no brakes or steering. Too far back - sways big time. As much as 1 inch in the wrong spot WILL make a difference. I mark my spot on th trailer.
5. Just slow down- 10 minutes at the end of a trip means nothing compared to writing off your vehicles.

Re: ef towing

If you have the XD right forward on the trailer and the back of the EF is sitting down from normal hieght I`d say you might need to lengthen the drawbar on the trailer as it isnt putting enough wieght forward. Have used plenty of different trailers over the years and have only struck one that was no good ie was bloody dangerous at anything over 60k`s.

They go from the tow ball, down the sides of the trailer. Very common on caravans, make one hell of a difference.

I have a set of them, ill take a pic tomorrow.
