Do all El fairmont ghias come with a tickford engine? and how can i tell?
Is the performance the same from the tickford engine or is it better than the power from the I6 of a gli?

I am new to the forum, have been reading the postings for a long time and thought it would be good to join in.

Gday Matt,
Yeah the EL Fairmont Ghia's did come with the Tickford I6HO Motor.

The big difference though Between the Ghia Motor, and the XR6 Motor is the Ghia's got the restrictive and Quiet Exhuast.

Because of this, power is down from the EL XR6 motors.

Anyway, the EFII Ghias, EL Ghias pump out 162Kw, at 4900 RPM.

There are a few ways to tell if the Tickford motor is fitted,

1) On the Ghia's, the 4.0i Sticker on the Front Doors is Gold.
2) The Rocker Cover on the Motor is Red. (Doesnt stop anyone painting, or changing the rocker cover though to pretend).
3) The Tickford Wings are stamped on the Front of the Head of the Motor. (You need to remove the Power Steering Plastic Cover to see if it is there).

Apart from that, all 6cyl EL Fairmont Ghia's have the Tickford Motor. (Unfortunately though, the Ghia's dont get the XR6 3.45 Ratio Diff !)

Cheers mate, just bought the thing last weekend, traded up from a El futura sapphire. Amazing car!

Feels like it is slightly more responsive than the futura, then again, thats why there was a 7 thousand dollar difference btween my trade in and the ghia.

I thought they did! My EL Fairmont (not Ghia, though) has a 3.23 (I've clambered under and checked the tag) but I thought the Ghia had the same LSD 3.45 as an XR. Anyone with a Ghia to confirm?
Actually, just re-read original post. (Forgot that Mat just acquired a Ghia). Climb under and have a look at the tag on your diff housing, should tell you its ratio.

Climbed under and had a look (copped a whole heap of soot and dirt and s**t) its 3.23, it matches with the specs that i have in the manual.

scratch that, meant to put 3.45, not 3.23, its been a long day. So yes it has the same diff ratio as an xr

Damn, I guess its just another reason why I should have shelled out the extra clams to get the EL Ghia, instead of the EFII Ghia !
