Hi

A few mates and I have been doing a 5 speed conversion on my EL I6 over the last couple of weekends. It's taken much longer than we had hoped because it's turned out the wrecker I got the conversion kit from has given me some EB parts (flywheel, clutch etc.) when he told me they were all from an EL.

I'm trying to work out if the computer he's given me is actually from an EL or not. It would be good to work it out before we try putting it in, because if we go to put it in and it's wrong it means another 1-2 weeks the car is off the road.

The computer fits the connector in the EL fine, but all E series probably do... the outer casing looks a lot different to the auto one I took out, and the stickers with model codes etc. have been removed (a bit suspicious).

The photos are of the manual computer. So if anybody has seen an EL manual computer, could you please have a look and let me know if it looks like it should?

Impossible to tell from a visual inspection. Catch codes would help but even then.....

So if it fits i'm assuming it has 60 pins on the connector? This means could be anything from EA-EL (with exception of EF which had EEC-V 104pin loom). Unfortunately only one way to find out i think.....

Well if its not EL then the thermo fans wont run, and the runners wont switch, easy way to tell if you can put in the car that is.

Anything more written on that sticker, can you find any sort of manufacturing date on it.

Don't know if this will help or not or even if you can do it but...

Plug the computer in, turn your ignition on, and switch between econ and norm. if you have it in norm, and it says econ on the dash then its EA-ED,

I've heard that they switch differently ie EA-ED vs EL so don't quote me on this...

Yeah they switch differently, my power light comes on in econ mode.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried the power switch thing. With the manual ECU the power switch does nothing at all, which is understandable as the 5 speeds have no power switch.

However I noticed that with both the manual and the original auto ECUs in, the fuel pump buzzes when turning the ignition to on, whereas with no ECU in the instrument lights still come on but there's no fuel pump buzz. I can't try starting the car yet cause there's no gearbox in....

Does this mean it is the right ECU? Or would the fuel pump spool up when turning the ignition even with an EA-ED ECU? I would have thought nothing would happen at all with an EA-ED ECU as if there was none there?

EBII, ED and EL Smartlock ECUs are all pretty much interchangeable. Most of the pin outs are the same, just a few little things are different (ie; EB and ED not running the fans). EA and EB series 1 will run the car I believe, but there are a few power steering issues that come up I believe.

I've got an EL ECU in my ECU and the only wiring changes I made were adding wires for the fans and intake manifold runners.

Do you have a trip computer in the car? The EB and ED ECU send a different signal to the trip computer than the EL. My trip comp doesn't work 100%. However I don't think you'll be able to tell without starting the car.

Nah I don't have a trip computer, so I might be able to get away with it if it is EB2-ED.

If the thermos don't spin at all I'll know it's not EL.. and it will be time to go and cause some trouble for the wrecker who said it is
