Hi guys, My mates 4 speed in his 5.0L EL has shit itself. Anyone in Melbourne know where and how much we can get a new/reco one for a good price. His mechanic quoted him $4000 (at wich point we laughed and told him where to go, I figured $2000 MAX!!
Is it Cheeper to Convert to manual?? If so anyone recomend a good place do get the conversion done?

What did the slush-box die of? How many k's on the EL? Did he do excessive towing / burnouts etc?

$4000 for a 4speed rebuild sounds about average. Very very expensive boxes to have rebuilt.

Yes it would be cheaper to convert to a manual (Go figure) Depending how its done etc it could could you anywhere between $1000 - $2500 for a Manual conversion.

4k for a rebuild...man thats a rip off...i got mine done in my old ea (yep a 4 speeder) a few years back for $1600...admitedly that was for a 6, but the differences b/w a box for a 6 and an 8 is not that huge to justify a $2400 difference.....

$4k is way too much. I got mine done for under $3k. That was repalceing nearly everything, except for the gears, and a new modified valve body.

Thanks guys. I thought it was a bit too much! Anyone know what a brand new box is worth? How about one from the wrecker?
Is the Box in my EB2 V8 the same as his? If it is i might give him mine and convert to manual myself!

Yeah, EB-EL V8's run the 95LE trans.

Not quite correct,
EF/EL V8's are fitted with 97LE transmissions.

you are better off getting it rebuilt than buying a 2nd hand one from a wrecker (you never know where it's been ). Shop around a bit for the best price.
