Had a problem with my car tonight. Driving home from work when all of a sudden the engine just died. I shifted the car into neutral and just rolled around the corner and into a nice big car park to get it out the way.

I have a feeling that it is the fuel pump that died on me. Is this a typical scenario?? I have been having problems with starting the car prior to this, as in I needed to turn the ignition on, off, on, off and back on then it would start.

Now when I turn the ignition on, I can't hear the pump, and the engine just keeps turning over and over.

So am I right in assuming the fuel pump, and is it difficult and pricey to replace??

How can I make absolute certain that it is the pump before I go out and get a new one??

The way id check to see if its the fuel pump would be to get an empty bottle, pull the fuel line off the carby, or whatever type of induction you have, then put the fuel line into the bottle. Turn your engine over for a few seconds, 5 - 10, and if your fuel pump is stuffed, there wont be any fuel in bottle. If there is, then start looking elsewhere.

NOTE: If your using injection, its probably best for this to be a two person job, and as soon as you pull the fuel line off the fuel rail get a plug or something to cover the hole, or you'll get air in the fuel rail which is great fun to get out! :)

The way I'd test to see if it's the fuel pump is (this ones easier), turn the ignition to the "off" position, then turn it to the "on" possition. If you hear the pump prime? The pumps fine. No prime it aint going to start.

Yes this is the way they normally die. I had the one die on my EL last year. I got one trade for $110 exactly the same pump etc as the gen Ford pump. Same part number even.

Cheers for the prompt reply. Im now almost certain its the fuel pump, so i'll duck down and get one and hope that I can get it installed and working by this afternoon!!!
