Engine problem

The car an XB Fairmont. Engine 351 Cleveland.

In the past 3 weeks I have been trying to locate a fuel problem as it was intermittent and displayed weird symptoms.

Problem was found to be blocked fuel line. The rubber line connecting the plastic line had decayed. This starved the feul and also cause the diaphram to fail in the mechanical fuel pump.

Problem eventually was sorted by purchasing a Holley blue fuel pump and reg. I then ran 3/8th line (300psi) stuff from the tank to the factory 3/8th line that runs into the engine bay.

Above fixed. Fuels no drama now. I am happy that bits over finally!

Now I started the car up and it's running on 7 cyls. Cylinder no 6 carboning plug (fuel carbon not oil etc). Engine and heads are 11,000k's old.

I've replaced the plugs. Ran on 8 till the plug carboned again within 2-3 mins.

What could be the problem?

a) Roller rocker adjustment on the 6th cyl?
b) Lead?
c) Valve burnt due to fuel starvation from above drama?

If it's a valve? Thats not really a problem. As the heads are getting taken off for machining so I can fit 7/16th screw in studs anyway.

have you done a comp test on it??? If it runs on eight cyls after cleaning the plug but then fails not long after it could be a number of things. Poor spark, dodgy plug or lead, poor compression etc... What kind of manifold and carb you running???

After you do these if the prob is still there then do compression test

Yes. Comp test 160 dry and 230 wet every cyl with a semi flat battery. Probably higher as it was turning fairly slow. Maybe 100-200rpm tops? Engine has 10.5:1 comp ratio.

Carbs a Holley 750 dp hp. Also 11,000k's old. Plugs less than 10 mins old. Leads 11,000k's that will be tomorrow test. :)

Everything was 100% till I had the fuel blockage. I got the fuel @ Shell in Port Melbourne. Did 200k's no problems then on my way home bang. I could only drive 50 meters at a time.

Yes. Same plugs the engine builder runs in all his 10+ comp ratio engines.

Won't be the distributor as its only 11,000 k's old. Leads are the same age. Guess I'll test those to make sure. Rotor button is 100%.

I figured during the fuel blockage the mixtures ran lean?? Then I've burnt a valve. Although they are stainless valves. I don't know.

Lead check tomorrow and I'll pull out number 6 plug again. Then check my roller rocker adjustment. Just to make sure the valves are 100% closing. There is supposed to be .024 thou clearance which I am sure there is.

Thanks for the reply's everyone thats replied so far.

I'll check the suggested parts that I already haven't checked and go from there.

If all else fails? I'll rip the heads off and check to see whether there's a burnt valve. Just means I'll get my screw in studs faster and the burnt valve (if burnt) reseated.

Brenden

Ps..If you have another though please post thanks again.
