Escort Questions

I have just bought a mk1 2dr for 250 no rust so good body thats not the problem. Sometimes it will backfire through the carby, also the engine was supposedly recoed but i doubt it. It blows heaps of smoke when you press the accelerator and not when its idling, are the rings gone?? Also if too much oil is in the engine could it come out the exhaust?? As i dont know whether the reco conveted it to unleaded i put LRP in as i know escorts ran on super what would happen to the engine if it did infact run on unleaded with the LRP in it. The engine is a 1300 by the way.

Im not really worried as i am planning to do a 2ltr conversion. I just dont like having anything that runs crap and would like to be able to try and fix it. Other than rings being crap what else causes lots of smoke. As i said it really only does it when i press the accelerator not idling and boy its a lot of smoke. ie undrivable.

I bought it off a wreaker and this is why i know so little about the car and engine, i mainly wanted the body.

LRP does this to some cars (the smoke thingy) switch to premium unleaded and add redex or some other upper cylinder head lubricant instead. Works for my 1980 LC Lancer.

Yes too much oil does cause smoke and alot of it!

Here's your checklist in this order....

1. check dipstick for oil level
2. change oil & filter anyway regardless
3. get compression test done
4. drop in the 2L Pinto motor
5. upgrade g/box & clutch to handle extra poke ~ RS2000 spec
6. upgrade brakes
7. upgrade suspension
8. wash it
9. have a beer.....

I want to die like my Grandfather did .... in his sleep. Not like the other passengers in his car at the time who were yelling and screaming....

Yeah i think it was to much oil, i borrowed a manual and found how much oil it needs, i measured it out 3.6 litres and changed the filter and spark plugs and it doesnt blow smoke any more. The dipstick is obviously wrong because its showing way below the min mark yet i put in exactly the right amount of oil. It still backfires through the carby, is this caused by it running to lean?? If so how do i fix it.
