Excess Fuel Consumption and TPS Problem

Gday

i recently purchased a ZL fairlane with the 250crossflow EFI motor in it

ive heard these motors arent the best but this one seems to run very nicely in tune with everything

the only issue is that when i give it hard acceleration it blows crap loads of black smoke ( fuel i assume ) and i reckon it could be a little less hungry on the fuel

i just noticed that the TPS ( Throttle position switch/sensor ) is disconnected .. on connecting it , the car dies and wont idle

could this be the problem for excess fuel consumption?
