Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

I was just wondering where everyone has mounted their fire extinguishers in their cars? I am thinking about putting one infront of the drivers seat. Also I have read on the net that the dry chem extinguishers are corrosive to pretty much everything. Is that true? As I don't see the point of saving my car from burning to the ground only to have it fall apart anyway.

Re: Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

In front of the drivers seat IMO is the best place for it - then you can grab it whilst exiting from the vehicle in a hurry, and not have to go to another part of the car to grab it. just make sure that it doesn't interfere with the drivers seat movement forward (have seen that done!!).

Don't know about dry chemical extinguishers being corosive though. But after seeing the end results of a engine bay fire, a little corosive is better than a big melted mess.

Re: Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

I have had mine bolted in front of my drivers seat for about 5 years, its easy to access.
If left, the powder from a dry chem extinguisher can be corrosive, like airbag dust.
Thats why you clean up after a fire.

Dry chem extinguishers are extremely corrosive, thats why insurers will write a car off if one has been let off inside a cab.

Re: Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

Apart from being corrosive the powder makes a hell of a mess and it gets everywhere. Sure you put out a fire before it takes hold but there is more damage made by the extinguisher. CO2 would be my weapon of choice in the event of a car fire. You hope you never have to use one on your own car though.

Re: Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

Ive got one in the driver seat pocket. I didnt want to drill any holes anywhere, and this is as secure as any. Its not going to come out in a crash unless I roll it, and id think it would be the least of my problems at that point.

Hahahh it must be a small exstinguisher Martin?

Dont forget with Dry Chem, you must give them a good shake at least every couple of weeks.
What happens is with vibrations the powder settles and sets rock hard over time.
A good shake every few weeks can keep the powder loose.

Re: Fire Extinguishers - Where to mount?

We had a truck when i was in Darwin, the extunguisher was presurised and gauge working fine.
nut when the truck cought fire, the extinguisher just coughed and then the truck burnt down.
The investigation turned up that the extinguished had the problem i just described.
