Ford Bronco Ignition Lock Codes

Howdy.

Something finally broke on my '93 Bronco besides the radius arm bushings.

The ignition lock is shot and when I search the part joints for a new one, they ask for the 'cut' and 'letter' info for that particular lock. The choices are cut 1 - letter A, or cut 2 - letter B, and more like this.

How do I find the one I need? I have the metal keycode tags but what am I looking for as far as the codes for a new lock?

thanks,

tony

Re: Ford Bronco Ingnition Lock Codes

The metal key tag is the code, give me that code and I'll get you the cuts for the key. or....Any competent locksmith can look up the code and key up the lock for you.

Re: Ford Bronco Ingnition Lock Codes

Problem has been resolved.

However, I'm still not understanding the lock cylinder differences that are offered by several of the parts distributors. Sure, the keycode from the tag can be used to cut a new key, but is the code from the tag specific to my version of lock cylinder.

I have a lock on the way that will come with only 4 of the 10 cuts needed to operate the locks. The remaining 6 will be cut from my original key. So does that become a "No. 4 cut - letter D' lock?

First time I've encountered a spell-checking Admin. Thanks.

Re: Ford Bronco Ingnition Lock Codes

Well I know it's too late now, but a locksmith could have gotten you straight in about 15 minutes, keeping your original key and one key would fit everything. Probably cheaper than what you will end up paying.
The ignition lock actually has 6 of the 10 cuts and the door lock has 6 of the 10 cuts, with 5th and 6th cuts being shared. I would still take your new lock to a locksmith and have him set it up for you, unless you don't mind using 2 different keys. Of course use one with a walk in shop so you don't have to pay them a service call to come to you.

I saw where you wrote during your edit Reason: apparantly can't spell or fix this header....., wasn't spell checking, just trying to help.

Re: Ford Bronco Ingnition Lock Codes

You can buy a DIY lock cylinder from Ford (and probably any parts store). It's tedious, but not difficult.

The average person would have trouble keying their own cylinder, but...... nice links steve83

Re: Ford Bronco Ingnition Lock Codes

fonz, I'm not usually known for doing things the easiest or cheapest way. But I was willing to invest the time and money into new parts, even if it cost a little more, just to learn a little more about the vehicle.

jwko, thanks.

steve83, your post explained the whole thing with one picture. Perfect. Thanks.
