Front rotor seals

Does anyone know whether the dust/grease seals on the front brake rotors are supposed to be properly and fully bottomed into the recess - or are they supposed to only be pushed in far enough to make the top face of the metal part (housing) flush with the edge of the recess?

I ask because a little while ago I fitted new seals and when I took the old ones out I was surprised to find that they were not pushed fully into their recesses but were only pressed in enough to make the housings flush with the edge of the recesses. They had been previously fitted by mechanics (ie. not as came from factory).

yep, seal should be flush with rotor. It is safe to tap the rubber seal to get it in flush. If you put it in all the way that leaves less contact for the seal over the bearing, meaning more grime and stuff can get in easier.

well thats the way i do them anyway, other people may do differently:s6:
