Fuel Economy

I just measured my fuel usage on the last tank and here is it.

13.07 per 100km

It was half city and half highway driving.

1989 EA Wagon 357,000kms
3.9 CFI
3 spd trans

Shell Optimax

I am not an easy driver, and do not baby the car at all. I just bought a 2 weeks ago and it needs to be serviced badly. So we will see how things improve after new. plugs, wires, dizzy cap, timing reset and etc.

That sounds about right under the circumstances. If you want to greatly improve fuel economy, the best place to start is the transmission. That requires a significant financial outlay, though, and can only be justified if you plan to keep the car for a long while..

Not into changing the tranny yet!!

Jack,

I don't think that changing to a 4 spd gives as big a difference as you think. I also drive a EB with a 4 spd that gets almost identical fuel economy. Plus the 4 spd gearbox costs a lot more to rebuild, so in the long wrong not sure if you are any dollars ahead. Now a 5 spd would be a different case all together.

More Fuel Facts

Howdy, I got some more fuel facts from the trip on the weekend. Hang on to your wallets.

Tank #1

Shell Optimax

355kms on a whopping 66.20L.

Works out to 18.64L per 100Km, not too hot!!

The first 200kms was some pretty nasty city driving, so I expected it not to be very good.

Tank #2

Woolworths Petrol Plus Regular Unleaded

557.6Kms on 76.9L (I thought the tank only held 72 liters according to the book!!)

13.79L per 100Kms

About 150kms was driving in the mountains south of Canberra with 7 people and load of camping gear. The rest was the Hume and Federal Highway. She rolls along nicely between 110 and 120 kph.

When I filled up last time in Maroubra in Sydney when I got back, the odometer read 357,999 kms, kinda cool.
