Head work

I just realised that my old mad had a head from a CFI EA in the shed. There is nothing wrong with it.
Firstly, CFI and MPI heads are identical right?
So I was thinking of getting a bit of work done on that head over some time and then when its finished all I have to do is swap my current head for the new improved head and hey prosto...from slow to quick in one day.

I just need to know the approximate costs for the following work I wanna get done:

- reconditioning
- oversize valves
- porting to accomodate oversize valves
- a bit of a grind for around 9:1 comp. ratio
- heavy duty valve springs (to hopefully accomodate a crow cam)

if you guys have any clue about the broken down costs of these things it would be much appreciated :)

head work

Spend the money on a 3.9 head, heaps better results will be made with the same dollars.

Re: head work

The 3.9 CFI and 3.9 MPI are the same head.

RE: head work

You probably won't get much change out of $800 thats what it cost me.This was done by a guy who builds race engines. If you go to your local engine reconditioner you might pay around $400-450.But they probably won't do much more then a standard valve grind, deck the head and check springs for tension.A couple of my mates payed $600 and there headwork was down by a machine shop they looked standard compared to mine all that looked like was carried out was very very mild port job but extremly polished.Mine on the other hand has had the combustion chambers modified alot more different to a standard EA.The valve angles were changed and extensive porting was done to increase airflow and swirl.I have keep my standard springs as they had more tension then a XR6 to my surprise.O I also had the valve stem seals done a must!!!So I would take it to a well known race guy who has experience and pay the extra money, you know what they say you get what you pay for.

GOODLUCK Lukey.

Re: RE: head work

Thanks for the info Lukey....I appreciate it.

Did you get your car dynoed before and after the work? I would be interested to see how much power you gained or how much quicker it feels.

RE:RE:REHead work.

Thats ok Zomwit you need to do more then head and cam to notice any big gains but you have to start some where and this is as good as place as any you. Will notice it a bit.I have covered this in more detail in a previous post "Dynoed and starting to smile" but here is a smaller version:

Well I started with around 89kw then I bolted on a set of Hm's headers. The rest of the system previous was made up of 2 1/4 inch system with 1 hotdog and 1 straight through muffler.I gained with the extractors 18kw which brought me up to 107kw at the wheels.
I then pulled the motor out and rebuilt it from the ground up,bearings e.t.c and replaced old bits that could be replaced with new bits. The performance side of things is mainly made up of extensive head job, variable cam gear,Crow 825 cam, racing clutch and 3:45 diff gears.Had the variable cam dialed in and gained around 2-3kw but its more used for where you want the power curve to occur and it has given me a nice one at that but I intend to play with it myself to see want else it can do.I really noticed the difference with the diff gears going from 2.92:1 2 pinion 0-100 time of 8.3sec with engine mods,to 3.45:1 4 pinion LSD 0-100 time of around 7 sec not exact time yet as only used a stop watch. It really pulled in every gear.

So far end result with cam gear dialed in,3.45:1 diff gears installed total gain........4kw thats all I gained from the above mods.I could not belive it.I was told to put my old diff gears back in and compare, apparently these new dynos take way to much into consideration explained more in the previous post.

I wanted answers WHY.I was told I had a restriction. So I pulled off the airbox lid and made 4kw.The engine has the potionel to make power but something else is restricting it.Apparently a standard EA only make 0.5-1kw once the MPI airbox lid is removed. But there is something else. They jacked up the ass end and said there is your problem your exhaust is to small. From what it sounds like"to the triained ear" ( I couldn't hear it) you are having old burnt gases returning into your combustion chamber, due to the increased in airflow and overlap of the lumpier cam is the cause of this.I was told that it is not uncommon for a modified engine to loose power if everything is not right and in my case this was true.

I thought **** more money. So I went and installed a 2 1/2 mandrel bent system and the cat modified to suit( re:dynoed and starting to smile).

Straight away I noticed the difference. The tacho needle swung nicely. It wanted to rev and it felt like it could keep going, the pull was so much more noticable. On the dyno again and me smiling well for a sec. Now she has 122kw at the wheels me a happy camper. But here is the sad news. Before the exhaust was modified she ran 13.5:1 ok for power but could be better, now she runs around 14.5:1 which is not good for making power and makes piston melting a brezze. So now I will have to either have a chip installed of a rising rate fuel pressure reg.Possibly Chip. But this means more grunt in the end but at present Iam worried about my pistonies.

On the up side, I have achieved a good result, have a look at ChipTorque's web site and see what mean.An EA engine management system is good for around 115kw as you can see mine is flowing and pumping too well and the fuel demand can't keep up with air flow and speed.

Beats and smiles so far,VP V6 seeya,250 motor bike(70's)yep yep,V6 manula camry bye bye,XE V8 hah,VR-VS V8 ute worked "What Tha" before FFFUUCCKKK if I don't back off and let him win hes going to kill both of us.I am not trying to race for fear of melt down but its heard to resist.

So much for the short story.Hope this helps

CYA Lukey.

power

luke i just pulled the cam out of my hottie, and it was a crow 825 also, so i asked my ea guru mechanic what spec it was and he said it was an xr6 grind, so pull that off and get one with some serious lift! the one i am installing has 530 lift at the valve compared to just a bit more than stock crow 825 (would be well worth it) I think crows wild cam is close to this but i got my new cam through this mechanic who had this cam custom ground to his specs. By the way this cam i got guarantees at least 20 genuine rwkw's
