Howdy Ford Fans....
Well plain & simple i NEED ideas for causes of low oil pressure..
already changed oil/filter sender, put a press. gauge to it & it is reading low..
motor is just about out & i need help in where to look

Hi buddy,
just looking through my old workshop manual for a cleveland and it gives the following reasons for low oil pressure:
(I haven't mentioned oil or filter because you say you've already replaced them)

1. Oil pump pressure relief spring stuck open or spring broken
2. Split or obstructed oil pump pickup pipe
3. Excessive bearing clearance, or
4. Excessive wear in the pump itself.

when you took your readings was the engine hot or cold, basically if the readings are low both hot and cold it could be the pump or relief spring - if the readings fairly high when cold and drops when the engine is hot look at your bearings.

are you running the standard sump or a larger capacity one, If it is the larger sump have you got the correct pickup pipe

Alrighty the motors done say 20-30 Thou/K's, I have a high energy sump & the pickup was supplied..
Basically when started cold its abit low say 1/4 to 1/2 on the gauge then once warm sits in the red unless i hit close to 3000rpm & it sits where it used to 3/4 or more..
Pressure gauge sits on 290kpa then drops off to 125kpa at idle, I guess ill have it figured out within the next few days...

I was told the other week by a mech tech teacher that my high prob is the pressure relief spring. before I replaced the sender, oil twice, flushed engine oil, and checked it with a caliberated gauge it was goig into red at IDLE. It doesn't go into red since the flush. All it did before it played up was always sit on the second highest white bar off red. And NOW... just sits above that at revs and half way at idle. (strange!!!!)

Alrighty i found the %@%&*&@@ problem.... took the sump off to find one oil pump bolt sittn in the sump & the other loose which allowed the pump to "swing in the breeze"
Not Happy Jan....
All this from a reputable engine builder in MORLEY I shall say no more...
Slim do u have a fax # where i can fax this 347 blueprint form to if not will try to get it scanned from a mate ok
anyone got any ideas if a high volume oil pump is a good idea??
