Re: honing

If you need to ask, get a pro to do it. It's not easy, & you can stuff the cylinder faster than saying "sh*t!".

Re: honing

Depends on rings, these days they hardly mark the bores...

Re: honing

This a relatively easy job. You need a three prong spring loaded honing tool from any auto shop and two sets of stones = medium and fine (look for ABW brand if you can). The idea of the hone is to glaze break and provide a surface for oil retention.

You use a speed controlled hand drill and move the hone in and out of the pot to create a 45° crosshatch. Use the medium stones first and finish with the fine. Use very fine oil or kero while honing. Wash bores with kero, followed by warm soapy water.

The cutters on the new rings will sheer any high spots if you make sure you run the engine with good ring pressure and revs immediately after a rebuild, by giving it a workout up and down some slopes. To do this don't idle the car for long and take it up to say 80kph and back off to about 40kph, leaving in top gear and accelerate still in top gear, do this about five times. Hills are a bonus. Rings will then be bedded to new hone and an oil change required. If you don't do this you rings will wear rapidly.

Re: honing

clevoxt you are after a "deglaze". It cost me $25 to get an engine shop to do my Cleveland. Yes it is easy to do, but an engine rebuilder will get the cross-hatch pattern spot on. For what they will charge it is worth taking it to a shop IMHO.

The break-in procedure as xpc66 explained is also very important. If you live in a flat area try towing a tralier or getting four of your mates in the car to load it up.
