How do I read ECU diagnostic codes?

The factory manual says I can read ECU diagnostic codes with a multimeter, buzzer, or light as well as the Ford diagnostice tools, but it doesn't give clear instructions on how to connect and use the alternatives. I know where the connector is and I can follow the timing intervals for codes and sequences, but I need to know how to connect something to it so that I can get the codes.
