i need to replace the a/c evaporator in behind the dash, i'm told its leaking and will cost $900 to fix, but a genuine ford part is $150, i know you have to pull the whole dash out, but could someone explain to me how to actually replace the part, do i have to worry about gas etc and where is it located exactly?

Yes you do have to worry about the gas, the evaporator forms part of the pipework for the a/c. You might be able to save on a lot of the labour cost by removing the dash yourself but only do it if you are confident you know what you're doing.

by a maintance manual for 50 bucks at supercheap, you cant go wrong with one of those.

Depends what gas your running??

Is it a R134a system? If so i think???? you might be able to do it yourself.
If it is R12, you have to get it degassed at a qualified place, since it is a CFC and its bad for the atmosphere.

Have a look at this forum. It has got all the info you'll ever need on doing anything related to automotive air conditioning. (Tells you how to regass it too, if your game!)

Ahh if only it was that easy! My mechanic has quoted me $500 for labour, plus parts, to replace the evaporator in a '94 EF Futura with 305,000km on the clock.

The book has every procedure imaginable, except replacing the evaporator unit!
