How does a detroit locker drive on the road?

Hi People,
I know this maybe should be in the driveline section but its a more general question. Since finding out the nine ince centre I bought is totally knackered I am considering buying a detroit locker since they are about a hundred bucks dearer than a new LSD centre. What I would like to know is how ppl find these on the road? I would like ppls recent experience because ive been told they are not as noisy as they used to be. This is for a Falcon ute. I dont mind some noise etc. Will this make the car a total pig on the street?
Thanks Corey

I had one in a 69 350 Comaro years ago..As soon as power is applied they lock and understeer is imposible to stop, like driving a front wheel drive car in rain..
Imo get the clutch packs in 9" fixed.....

Do you plan on doing burnouts?

Re: How does a detroit locker drive on the road?

I dont plan on doing burnots. A brand new LSD costs about $770 and a detroit locker costs about $870. I wonder how long the LSD really lasts. I dont have to do a huge mileage to work or anything. Friend of mine that circuit rae find that the lsd does not last that long, so they run spools now.
Thank Corey

LSD is a much better option for the street, as the detroit locker is basically all or nothing (locked under power, free under overrun). There are also a lot better LSD's and more options than when the detroit locker evolved to solve a need.

Since your not doing burnouts, I suggest you stick with an LSD.

There other options about. I run an Auburn LSD in my HT Kingswood.

Re: How does a detroit locker drive on the road?

Biggest problem with them is the massive power on/ power off clunk you get when driving sedately.

If you're not driving a manual you're really just steering.

Re: How does a detroit locker drive on the road?

Mine was the newer revised version, and it was relatively smooth and quiet. 90% of the time it acted like a regular LSD. But i'd only ever put one in a competition vehicle. LSD = Street
Locker = Track

What about a Detroit TRU-TRAC. They are a gear type L.S and from all reports are supposed to be good and are very smooth and don't wear out like LSD clutches.
