It gets silly when you start to include series I, II, III etc.
Why wasn't the EBII just EC for example!

Utes follow the sedans to XF then continue XG, XH, XHII (doh!) then pick up the sedans again with AU.

Fairlanes, I have NFI. Though I know my grandmother had a mint ZA (the first Fairlane) so it probably starts there.

I'd guess ZA, ZB, ZC, ZD, Z?, ??

The reason it wasn't so was because of the simple fact of money. If a motor company launches a new model code then the whole R&D has to go into it and, going by ADR, a crash test has to be completed and so on and so forth. Becuase Ford had the ED in mind they decided to update the EB and refresh it with the ED. Same goes with the AU (I,II & III).
