Hi all,

What can be done for about $500 to my stock EL V8 to
improve performance. I know its not a lot but any
suggestions would be nice. I already have updated
the exhaust from the cats back.

Only one word comes to mind. Extractors.

As Jon says; the factory headers aren't any good. Unless of course you have a late series two vehicle.

Other "free" things you can do are; throw away the hotplate on top of the engine, run 98 octane fuel and bump your initial timing up by 2-4 degrees.

One thing(two actually) Ive done for a couple of guys is bore the stock MAF to 59mm and modify the fuel reg. to make it adjustable.
A 65mm t-body helps but you'll probably blow your $500 on that alone if you buy new.

My EL is a late 1998 model so based on the above note they should be ok. Will look into the other stuff.

I'm guessing it's only the EL2 XR8 185kw that have half decent headers, Judging yours is a Ghia i'm guessing it will have 165kw and the headers are pretty ordinary. Best way is to have a look at them and you'll notice the headers are crimped in places.

Yes they look kind of crimped when they come out from the exhaust manifold and then the pipe rounds out . So it sounds like the factory headers are the more crappy ones. bummer for me :(

Extractors make a huge difference over the standard headers. If you are looking for a set cheap, I will probably have a set of genie extractors up for sale in a week or so. They have been on the car for around a year, and are in good condition, but as I said, I won't know for a week or so.
