Neglected Car Won't Turn Over

I'm not sure where to post this, so I'll stick it here.
(Someone please let me know if it belongs somewhere else.)

I bought a '91 Escort LX last Fall. I didn't drive it at all during the winter and didn't realize that I should have been starting it every so often to keep it running.

Now it won't start at all. It doesn't even try to turn over. When I put the key in it does absolutely nothing. No noise at all.

Also, oddly enough, neither the gas tank door switch nor the switch to open the hood work. Poor car... I neglected it.

Can someone tell me what the problem might be?

It's not the battery, because we already tried putting a new one in... and still nothing.

Check battery connections...
If manual put in third gear and try pushing it?
You may have issues with starter motor? Check the small wire that activates solinoid...
I have to say you have what you deserve !!

It's an automatic.

Someone told me to tap on the starter with a hammer.
Unfortunately the person who told me couldn't find the starter so we could tap it.

Yeah, thanks for that.

I didn't know! It's my first car. No one ever told me.

Is there a website that maybe shows where everything is in the engine? I'm pretty decent w/following instructions.

Re: Neglected Car Won't Turn Over

The starter motor would be bolted to bellhousing behind motor...
Follow cables from battery + side the thicker cable should go to starter motor...
Make sure battery is installed with correct pollarity...
Take spark plugs out and try turning by hand...
Check all fuses...
