I Have an EA 5 speed manual with a 4.0 litre motor (was changed before i got the car). Ive had it for about a year now and have never had any problems. It has been running excellent. I came home after a day out and about (probably did about 100km) , had dinner, and then went to take a friend home (car would have been sitting for about 4 hours), and it would not start . Turns over no worries, but won't fire. It has never had any starting problems before, not even a hint of them. Does anybody know what the problem might be?

Ignition system problems are very common on E-Series falcons. First thing to check is if you have spark. When the problem happens, pull one of the leads out and see if there's spark coming out or not. If not, the most common problems will be a leaking/cracked ignition coil and a faulty ignition module, which is bolted to the side of the distributor. The cheapest way would be if you could borrow a known good coil from someone and by-pass youirs. If you still have no spark go after the module.
If you have spark when cranking then it could be a fuel pump/regulator problem. cheers

I tested for spark and that is all ok.

Come to think of it, about 2 months ago the motor was running a bit weird when trying to do 50kmh in town zones (like it was trying to stall, and surging a little) which happened just after filling up at a fuel station, I just thought it was a bad batch of fuel as it went away after a few days, looks like that may have been a sign of a fuel problem.

I guess the fuel regulator is the next step.

Hey guys,
back again,

Replaced the fule pump and that was the problem!

Now it's been running fine since I put it in, but just today it's doing some weird stuff again - CAN"T DRIVE IT WEIRD.

The motor runs in like a cycle - runs normal then slows down, like its starving for fuel and goes back to normal, then slows down again ..... does this for a while (maybe couple of minutes) then stalls. Start it again and it does the same.
I was told I may have put the wrong pump in (?) - any ideas people?
