I have an 85 ZL Fairlane that I acquired recently.
It has a very noisy air-con fan.
A "bump-bump" noise that speeds up when the fan speeds up.
Quite intolerable to live with.
Sounds like something hitting on something.
My mechanic is at a bit of a loss regarding the best/cheapest way to go about fixing it.
Any advice of any kind would be very much appreciated.

It sounds like you've sucked something into the fan, never had the opportunity to work on an Ausssie Ford (really wish they'd bring the Falcon over here), but if you can gain access to the inlet side of the fan, you might be able to pull out what ever's in there. I've got a 73 pick up that managed to get a leaf in the fan. I'm trying to ignore it, but now I'm debating whether I should pull the fan or break my hand to gain another joint so I can pull out the leaf.

Yep - the intake for the fan is right above the passenger footwell

if you pull the glovebox out (it just clips off it's hinges) to give yourself a bit more room, you should be able to get down there with a torch and look up into the fan to see what is in there
