Oil Leak

Hey all i think my EL falcon has developed a problem. Its leaking oil for the first time ever i think. I looked in the engine bay and i think its coming from some part of the steering. Sorry dunno much bout engines, but the metal beam connected to the steering wheel with comes through the firewall, just where it starts connecting onto another metal beam, there seems to be oil there.

Also looking underneath the car, the front panhard rod??? is full of oil. Power steering fluid seems to be low as well, considering i just topped it up a few months ago. I think its cause by the leak, and as i drive the air pushes oil onto it.

Steering is making a creacking noise as i turn the wheel, no matter if im stationary and rolling along.

whats the problem?

First determine what sort of oil it is.

What does the oil look and smell like? Is is reddish like trans fluid or blackish like engine oil?

if u don't know what your looking at then take it to a mechanic, before you try and do something and end up stuffing the car or worse stilll having an accident due to poor workman ship and killing yourself

Hey Snavy...My XE copped the same problem. Turned out to be a steering box internal issue. Plus the seal had decided to take a vacation and leak out fluid everywhere. However, it took a mechanic to find out that it was the box's problem, so do as harasn says, and get someone to throw an eyeball over it.

snavy, generaly what happens is one of two things. Either the power steering pressure switch starts leaking,(and believe me, Ford parts people know the number for this part off by heart), or the seal on the "power head" of the steering box is leaking. Fix this needs to take the p/s out. At a chance, it may also be the cam chain tensioner O-ring, if the oil seems to be coming from the p/s reservoir area. To fix this is relatively easy, but the p/s reservoir needs to be removed.

cool, i wasnt going to do it myself, i was just wondering what could be the problem before i take it to the mechanics.
