My Fairmont is leaking oil and I need suggestions on what it could be!! It is leaking a fair bit, after 10 mins there is a sizeable puddle under the car. It seems to be coming from the rear of the engine, i think possibly about the steering gear and it is covered in oil and it drips off the K frame. One suggestion I've had is the rear main crankshaft seal. I really want it to be something simple as I am on a VERY limited budget and it comes up for rego in February and it won't pass the way it is.

Also, the power steering is very rough at times. It has got plenty of fluid in it, it just vibrates when the wheel is turned. Any ideas??

Sorry, i was meant to say above the steering gear, not about. It's deffinately not steering fluid, but the engine oil doesn't seem to be dropping at all.

it could possibly be the rear of the valve cover gasket leaking down the back of the engine.
best way to check is to degrease the engine...take it for a quick spin and then switch her off and check out where shes leaking from.

if it is coming from the valce cover gasket it is a very minor and easy repair....and yes they can leak enough to produce a big puddle.

hope it turns out to be a minor repair

I will check that, but I don't think that would be the problem as it had the valve stem seals done the day before I picked it up meaning that the gasket should have been changed when that was done.

If its a cork gasket they move easily and they may well have caused the leak when they put a new gasket in after replacing the valve seals.
