Overheating first experience....

Ok, i had done many changes (replacements of parts) in my Ford contour 95 2.0L (4 cyl) 145K mi. but today i had my first overheating (smoke coming from under the hood) experience...the mechanic told me since the fans are working ok that is most likely a water pump issue...so i think i should change it...

here's my question since am a doityourselfer

- i have the chiltons manual for my car but if anyone else know (due to experience) a better step by step way to do it...I WILL BE APPRECIATED A LOT...!! (website, pdf file, diagram, etc)
- What else should i replace besides (Water pump, water pump gasket and timing belt) ?
- things that i should take care of the most during the process of installing cuz i think uninstalling shouldnt be that hard...

any help guys it will be very helpfull....thanks in advance for your cooperation and i hope this is the first and the last experience of overheating

sincerely

Renato

Re: Overheating first experience....

An easy though inaccurate way to test the water pump is to fill the radiator, pull off the top hose and pump belt, then spin the pump by hand and see how much water comes out the thermostat housing...
