Can anyone help with this?

Just got my '84 Falcon XF,

filled her up with $80 of petrol and valvemaster, drove her for a week and thought she is amazing on petrol! the needle hasn't moved!! Needle showed empty when I bought the car, full after filling up.

Now today, week and a half later, the needle started going down rapidly and after about 20Km it was resting on empty again.

So basically the problem is....if there is any petrol in the tank the needle shows full....as soon as the tank is empty the needle drops back down to empty over 20km.

Filled her up again now and wont have time to look until the weekend, but in a week and a half I am driving down to the snowys and I don't really want to be stuck with no fuel!

Help anyone?

Work out how many k's per tank you can manage is the only way, the XF's always had dodgy fuel tank needles, they love to show full when they are empty, part of owning an XF, my dad had the problem fixed twice in a new XF, twice it came back, the trip meter will become your best friend.

It would do if it worked! KM clock doesn't work either. Thats on the to-do list this weekend!
Me and my house mate both bought XF's, neither of our km clocks work.

Any ideas where that may be down?

The only way they won't work is a broken cog (best of my knowledge), only solution is crack the cluster open and have a look and try repair it, or get a working one from another cluster, or a working cluster with roughly the correct k's on it.

I am guessing that the ACTUAL k's tick over, and its only the trip k's that dont work?

the XF's have always had dodgy fuel guages/senders, they are electronic i believe, rather than the standard float type. Mine tends to read full (but its digital), and then suddenly starts dropping like a block of concrete thrown into a pool!. But it should at least register some readings part way down...you may have a fuel sender issue.

the km clock......it is the current km and the total km clock that don't work..

Yup.. the fuel senders are dodgy.. even a working one will slowly make its way to half then plummet all of a sudden.

The odo and trip meter stop working due to a small plastic cog that breaks inside the speedo assembly. They are driven by a little motor and the cog is so brittle it eventually breaks. You can get replacement ones that are harder, but its a real pain to fit. I fixed mine by putting in a fairmont ghia dash cluster instead :)

I think i have the same prob with my xf ute i have duel fuel one day i had 1/4 a tank left on fuel and the thing just stopped and wouldnt go on fuel no more but the gas worked. so i took it into a gas place they checked it out a said the car was fine. my car is in impound at the moment but wen i get it bak i will fill it up and see how she goes coz i may have a dodgy fuel gauge too. if anyone else has had fuel problems on duel fuel other than the fuel guage could you please help me.
