Excuse the stupidity, but what exactly does it feel like?

Re: pinging

Its a slight rattle, you can barely feel it but it's quite audable, sounds very metallic. Hard to describe but it's unlike any other noise that comes from your engine. To see if you are pinging just drive up a hill at 50mk/h in 3rd gear at full throttle, should ping like hell if you have problems.

Re: pinging

Hmmmmm well that rules out pinging.

I get this really weird feeling every so often, like someone is letting a clutch in and out rapidly. If I back off the throttle and make it kick down it goes away.

I think the tranny is on the way out, I'll give it an apprentice tune in a minute and see what it does.

Re: pinging

Psycho...

Does it happen at lower revs only in 1st or 2nd.. sounds like gearbox alright. XF did that.. got the tranny rebuilt to my own specs for $700 including rear main.. so much nicer when you have custom shift points! And yay.. 90km/h in 1st held :)
