Pinging EB Monty

Trying to figure out why my EB2 Monty (4.0) is sometimes pinging up hills.

New plugs didn't help. Timing is dead on 10 degrees. Ran a bottle of Nulon Injector cleaner though it.

Premium unleaded seems to help somewhat. But i shouldn't need to do that.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Re: Pinging EB Monty

has head been done before, if so it may have had heaps of it, or there are sharp edges left in combusion chamber causing pre ignition... Balancer may of mover check top dead center, by taking plug out from number 1 and getting piston to top dead center then see if balancer lines up....
iM running much more than 10 deg, and it never pings, as the motor has no compression due to the flogging it cops

Re: Pinging EB Monty

Its not uncommon for the outer ring on the balacer to slip which will give you an incorrect tdc reading. If thats has happened your timing will be advanced. You can measure true tdc by screwing a bolt into #1 spark plug hole but if the balancer has slipped then it really should be replaced.

Thats the only thing I can think of if the car is running ok otherwise

Re: Pinging EB Monty

u should also note NZ, that when u screw bolt into the spark plug hole remove keys from ignition, u turn motor over till it hits the pistion and unable to turn motor mark the balancer in this spot, rotate motor back other way till it hits piston again, mark the spot, depending on lenght on bolt used the marks will be a fair bit apart, measure and mark exactly between the 2 spots, and this is exactly top dead center, ( i dont recomend using this method i perfer just feeling top dead center with screw driver downspark plug hole)

Re: Pinging EB Monty

Thanks guys :)

OK, just to clear things up. When we're talking about a "Balancer" are we talking Harmonic Balancer?

Say for example this is the problem. Would a workaround for this problem be to retard the timing?.

I've spent a packet on the bloody thing over the last few weeks with Rego, front tyres, bushes, AC regas, and the PS needs attention because the steering wheel is shuddering at low speed.

Cheers

Re: Pinging EB Monty

Yeah I knew how to do it I just couldnt be bothered typing it unless he asked You saved me the trouble. I had to do it on my ea once as a temp fix till a new balancer was installed
