porting/polishing - whatever it's called.

I've heard of port matching the inlet manifold to the cylinder head. On the MPI inlet manifold, I've noticed it has some rough edges around the tubes where it should meet the cylinder head. They are sharp if you run your fingers over them. Would I get any benefit like better air flow if I filed these edges off and finished it off with a bit of wet and dry to get a smooth surface? Or should I leave it alone?

Re: SPHELL

I'm planning on swapping my 3.9 head to a 4.0 head in a months time. I was thinking of buying a die grinder and doing a port and polish myself. I heard that this was one of the things done on xr6 heads. I might also change my camshaft while I'm at it and get a quote on having larger valves put in. This should get it up to xr6 stats.

But....

That might not be the best thing you could do.The XR6 has a completely different combustion design to the common Falcon.I would only match port the manifolds to the head. This can be done by using the gaskets as templetes. If I were you I would also consider other engine performance mods that will compliment the port/polish and possible cam.If you just have a port and polish you might gain some KW but you will not notice it at all on the road.A cam maybe increase KW's but still no push in the back feeling. If I were you place a set of extractors and good exhaust system on your pride and enjoy and if its an auto bash a manual in it then change the diff gears to either 3.45 or 3.23:1.These mods you will notice.Once you start changing cams, head design e.t.c you have to spend money else where to make it all work properly.Iam experiencing these problems with my car.Its now running lean because I increased the exhaust size from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2.I have done all the known mods, head work, cam, variable cam gear, diff gears, and extractors now I have got all that right I don't have enough fuel to make it go like it should so I have to spend more money to be happy with it.But once done it should go quiet nicely. So spend your money wisely. If you want to go the 'hole hog' by all means do it but if you want to only spend a couple of grand have a look at what I suggested. This is just my thoughts anyway.

Just a thought, maybe a cheap switch to an XR fuel pressure regulator will do the trick. The ELs at least run 300 kPa, while the standard EFs are 280 kPa. Don't know if your pump can keep up with that though.

pressure and flow are two differnt things - a fuel pump supplies flow, and the pressure regulator restricts the flow a certain amount to increase pressure - you can get more fuel pressure by fitting an XR6 regulator but i doubt you will see any gains, seat of the pants or on a dyno.

if you decide to port the head i suggest you get some advice and also show a lot of restraint - a lot of people get into trouble because they have a go themselves and port the crap out of the head without realising it, and next thing they know they have bored through a water jacket and the head is junk.

bigger holes are not neccesarily better, the aim of a port job is to increase flow as much as possible by removing the smallest amount of material possible, keeping the ports small but giving them great flow and swirl caractaristics will yeild more power and better response than just hacking away at the walls of the port.

good luck!
