Anyone here had a powerchip/unichip/ etc... installe don their 4.0L MPFI sixes? I am thinking of getting one to spice up the Fairmont a bit and reap better fuel economy. I also want it tuned to run 98 RON fuel.
Ofcourse I want a programmable chip so as when I change exhaust, cam etc it can be re-programmed to suit.
Those of you that have had a chip, can you say it was worth it? What sort of 'seat of the pants' feelings did it give you?
I am mainly looking for ED Falcons or EBII with the 4.0 MPFI. But ofcourse if you have an EF/L or AU witha chip I am sure the gains would be similar to an ED dispite a small power deficeit.

Buy a back issue of Zoom #53 / oct / 02.. They list all the after market ecu's.Prices from $1000+.Which is about the price of a chip.Unless your motor is moded it won't make much difference except lighter wallett..Quote from www.MRTrally.com
I had a powerchip in my old AU1 XR8 manual (sorry not a six) and it did make a difference. The chip actually increased the throtal response, smoothness and top end performance of the car. Tuned to a custom developed exhaust by Genie, the cars output increased noticably from stock form, however not so much later down the line when I had it taken out temporarily. At that point the engine was not stock anymore and with the chip removed, only a marginal difference was detected.
One thing worth mentioning, however was when the chip was installed fuel consumption actually improved. Overall I wouldn't go as far as saying the installation of a powerchip alone will deliver a great 'seat of the pants' sensation, however the combined of a chip with a few other mods and exhaust should definity bring performance benefits.
I'd be looking at a Unichip, tuned by a veteran who knows their business. Wouldn't consider anything from Powerchip or Chiptorque - we have proven at our club dyno days that these chips give you exactly 0 rwkW.
Club secretary Simon, with manual EF XR6, gained 0.5kW at the wheels by REMOVAL of his Powerchip. :read:
Personally I would get the exhaust done first before any piggyback unit. You will get more of an outright gain doing this, and also, when the time comes to fit your Unichip, the gains will be more and more effective with the exhaust system already in place.
EEC IV doesnt really "adapt" to changes. It does play with the mixtures during lean cruise conditions but apart from that it uses factory defaults which is when you notice power differences, IE during WOT.
