Problem starting

Hey all!

I just joined the forum and must say that I'm impressed with the depth of information. Nice....

I have a question that needs some technical expertise....I own a 99 Navigator and I've been experiencing difficulty with starting the truck. The engine will turn-over fine (I don't think its the battery or alternator), however it IMMEDIATELY shuts off upon ignition. Now, if I place my foot on the gas, the engine will remain running.....but once I remove my foot from the pedal, the engine shuts off again. ALSO, if I punch the accelerator a couple of times, the engine will begin to finally idle at normal rpms and I won't have ANY problems starting it until the next morning (or after LONG periods of rest....say 5-6 hours).

I took the truck into a dealership and they stated it was an idle-ator valve (what the heck is THAT?) and PCV hose that need to be replaced. Does that sound right? They were going to charge me $210 for labor and $130 in parts....which I thought was a bit steep, so I said 'no'.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Would that cause my start problems? Does that seem like a reasonable price? How easy/difficult would it be for myself and Uncle to do this procedure ourselves? Any guidance on the matter would be SO MUCH APPRECIATED!!

and look for "cleaning idle speed controller", pictures may be differerent, but your car will have one. Clean that out and see how you go.

Get this....

I never cleaned the idle speed controller, rather had the spark plugs and fuel filter replaced. Guess what.....I haven't had a problem starting the truck since I had those items replaced. I'm still going to clean the idle controller (as I have the K&N FIPK), but I guess the filter did the job????? Weird....maybe the fuel filter was more clogged than I thought.
