What is the benefit (or lack thereof!) of removing the rear resonator?..is it just for a better sound or is the performance/economy gains?..is it hard to remove, better done professionally??...

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. It said, 'Parking Fine.'So that was nice.
I got mine taken off my ea. I bought a whole new tailpipe which cost $66 fitted. it didn't make any difference to power or noise (although at idle you could hear it a TINY bit more. I later got a straight through muffler with the first resonator taken out. This cost $120 fitted and isn't much louder at all ( even with one muffler!), this made a bit of a difference. extractors and hi flow cat to come!
Personally, I wouldn't really bother unless yours is stuffed.
oh ok!! I didn't notice you had an AU XR8.... well yours is proba totally different story to my dirty old EA *bows down*
Thanks
Craig

when i first got my xr8 that was the first mod....didnt help with performance but increased the exhaust noise slightly..no droning though just a tad more roar from the glorious windsor.......

I opted to have none installed when I got my complete system done. It only drones in 5th @ 60kph, ie. never! Hard to describe the difference with / without, but without, it seems to have a bit more "bark" in the note, if that makes sense.

Clicky clicky here for previous ride! I still miss her!
I don't know about V8's or later models, but the on the EA to ED there is only one small resonator up near the driver's position and the other two are actually mufflers. A good first and CHEAP mod is to simply have the rear muffler replaced with a resonator (or removed altogether - see how it sounds on the muffler shop hoist) and the front muffler replaced with a straight thru type - but leave the little resonator up front alone or you'll get droning.
howdy dkmaj :-)
i got a local exhaust shop to remove just the rear resonator but in the end not loud enough for me. so i opted for a full twin 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent exhaust with lukey race magnum mufflers.no resonator at all.....down low very throuty at full throttle thunderous...but i was lucky that it doesnt drone at highway speeds, actually you can hardly hear it.but then again half the fun of driving an eight is to hear it. :-) paid about $420 for the later system.
