Reconditioned Engine Oil Consumption Questions..

Hey Guys,

Got a Rebuilt 250 Xflow in my XF. Its done about 1800 klms, and had its first oil change at 800klms. Its still using some oil...the dipstick is indicating just above 1/2 full at cold. I understand that the motor will use oil during the running in process...but is this too much?. I had a new set of rockers put into it last month....could that account for the oil usage? How long generally should a rebuilt motor consume oil at a rapid rate? Some people have told me up to 3000klms..others said until about 10,000?

Should i just not worry about it and top it up when its low?

Thanks

Extreme

IMO, the engine should only use oil until the rings are bedded in, which should only take a couple of hundred kms. Personally I would be worried about using 1/2 the oil in 1000km on a new engine, even while running in.

Re: Reconditioned Engine Oil Consumption Questions..

By the sounds of it thats more than a little excessive, half a sump full (~2lt) in 1,000k's you'd have a trail of oil out the exhaust.
My suggestion would be for you to do an oil change ( good thing anyway at current km's ), this way you know what the levels are and can keep an eye on things over the next couple hundred k's. If it continues the trend i'd be going to have talk with the responsible people.

Re: Reconditioned Engine Oil Consumption Questions..

My EB 4.0 has had a new bottom end fitted due to ring problems which caused excessive oil consumption (well over 1 litre per 1000km). I vaguely remember you got your XF engine from the same place I did?

Give them a call and sign up for the oil consumption test. I am guessing your rings are the same as mine were. You will have to do more kilometres before the decision can be made though.

Regards,
AP.

I think if you read again, Extreme said that it was showing half on the dipstick, which is about half a litre to a litre of oil

I know nothing if you get my drift. Do a few more kays and then call Mark about it. He'll know what to do, although of course he won't be happy about it (understandably).

Oh, don't use Shell Helix. The engine builders recommend Castrol so to make your oil consumption complaint valid make sure you are using castrol GTX3 or whatever the OHV engines need.
