My mother's car (6 years old and under 20,000 miles) has red slime under radiatior cap and water in reservoir is pink.

I'm thinking there may be an iron eating bacteria in the fluid.

Will flush and put in new anti-freeze.


But 2 questions:

1) Is bacteria likley source of red color and slime?

2) Does antifreeze/coolant include any sort of bacteria killing chemical to prevent this?

I cannot really answer both those "Bacteria" questions, but flush that nasy coolant out. Coolant breaks down after time and changes brownish or reddish in color.

I hope its not a GM with Dex-Cool in it. Pink in color sure sounds like it. 6 years old and 20,000 miles. Dont worry about any bacteria, it wont be of the flesh eating species if there is any.

It could also have sealant in it like Bar's Leak.
