Hi

I'm planning on removing the black plastic strips from the doors (the ones with the '4.0i OHC' decals) of my EL GLi so I can paint them white to match the car.

Just wondering if anybody with an EF/EL has done this and if so, how to get them off without ripping paint?

Also what to stick them back on with would be handy too :)

ive never pulled them off EF/EL but i have pulled them off EA-ED. used a flat butter knife to get them started then pulled the rest off by hand. its a lucky dip wether or not your paint decides to come off. if the car has never been resprayed then you should be alright with the paint. if it has and someone done a dodgy job then it could come off. to stick it back on use some doublesided tape. its what they use from the factory so its strong enough to hold it on.

MOst double sidded tapes fall off within 6 months.
I just ended gluing mine back on, with contact cerment.

after you have them off, lay them out flat and leave them in the sun for a day, the heat flattens them back out a treat, as they will no doubt curl alittle when you pull them off

ive never had this problem. were you using home brand or something? i used 3M on my mates car and its held them on for years.

No mate, i used the 3M stuff, costs a bit but it still started peeling at the front edges.

did you clean both areas with prep wash first? maybe this is why it started to peel off.

Yes mate, im not that silly.:(

I used K&H wax and grease remover, which is the same as Prepsol.

well ive used exactly what you have used but ive never had the problem youve gotten, perhaps its the extra heat around your area?

NO heat, ots got me stuffed why it came off, but its not now.
