My old mans ED GLi had a problem similar to that on the way across the Hay plains, it was sitting in the normal temperature position when suddenly it went straight up to overheating, we slowed the car down, drove it into Hay and stopped, found that a heap of water had gone (blown out of the overflow pipe due to the pressure build up), filled up the filler tank and had no problems the rest of the way to QLD
When we arrived we got the cooling system checked, the diagnosis, a common problem in all 3.9-4.0lt engines, is that when they are made, the milling sands are not taken out of the engine, well half of the side tank on the radiator was full of this milling sand. this normally gets checked and the side tank changed ever 100,000kms on ford servicing. but yeah, the temp went up because there was a temporary blockage of the cooling system from these sands, because of the block there was excess pressure and blew the water out of the overflow
