We had an E.L ex cop 6 in at work,idling rough.After replacing leads,cap,rotor, plugs,
compression test.Still rough idle!
The inlet gasget on#one had sucked in,new gasget.Run like a charm.Hope this helps those ruff six's...

I have had a rough idle problem on my XR6. Could you explain this in more detail.

Yes the inlet gasget gets sucked in or fulls out etc.Then it sucks air in cousing that cylinder to run lean,I guess what makes it worse the oxy sensers think motor is runing lean so rich'ens motor.making others run rich.Elswhere on here there can be a problem with head gasget too esp front.To test pull each plug off one at a time engine runing.It should drop revs evenly on each cylinder if not that one is not right.Plug or lead,cap can be tested that way too.

Put lead back on before gonig to next plug wire.All vacuum hoses connected esp to fuel regulator valve? Spark plug leads old? Cap?Plugs?

I have taken all of your advice to Brad Garlick and they are going to try all of this out.They changed my muffler today to see if that would make any difference because it had a non-standard muffler set-up. The Service Manager at Brad Garlick has been really helpful and is willing to help me solve this problem and often that is half the battle with dealers.

Fuel economy is also really bad. I have done most things eg fuel injectors. distributor cap, spark plugs, leads to no avail. engine has also been compression tested etc etc. I have even had them replace the Idle Speed Control valve which Tickford identified as a potential problem area!!!

Next I suppose is your idea and Brad Garlic say that they have had a couple of XR6's in with the same problem that you have identified.

No luck with Brad Garlick. New exhust and inlet manifold gasket has not solved the rough idle problem.

Where do you work mate? Maybe I could bring it in to you!

At work they only service their own vehicles and ours,[energy Australia] I'm a sparky work out in the field.But keep incontact with the mechanics.[driv em crazy?]
Are you sure the 02 sensers are working properly? Sending a lean message to eec making it run rich/richer or vice verser?How is the fuel consumption?Cam chain o/k as in cam timing?How many ks? Is it a surge or rough as a miss rough?Intermitant or seems to happen once every revo.?Could be alot of things ,down to even weak or broken valve spring/s.The p.v.c valve o/k?Try bloking it off while idling.
Yep the boys at B.G.F got their money and sent you on your way ha?I take it they checked all eec codes,did they disc battery say overnight?Well you can do that youself.It re learns and sometimes fix's itself!

Mate who knows what they did. I don't think there that interested. You obviously know your stuff (good on you)! I need someone with the experience and patience to work through this thing systematically.Someone I can trust as well....... any ideas!

Howdy Jason,

Sounds like you have been the victim of the lets try this, oh, that didn't work, let's try this, dealership mentality.

Has anyone done any exhaust gas analysis on the car?

Has anyone tested the fuel pressure and flow rate?

These things might seem basic, but an accurate 4-gas analysis of the exhaust, combined with individual cylinder fuel mixture testing, and high tension spark analysis, will help to pinpoint the area of the problem. I would be prepared to back my judgement (and my equipment)to the extent that if I couldn't accurately diagnose your problem, then I would not charge you a thing.

My workshop is at Penrith, if you get desperate and want to drive that far, (I'm assuming that you live somewhere close to Ryde),I would be happy to check it out for you.
